Pumpkin Chocolate Cupcakes with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting...

A bit of a twist on the classic pumpkin and cream cheese combo... pumpkin chocolate cupcakes with cinnamon cream cheese frosting from The Baking Stone!

Pumpkin Chocolate Cupcakes with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting
Makes 12 cupcakes
  • 1 cup whole wheat pastry flour (can substitute all purpose)
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 handful chocolate chips (optional)
Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp. butter, softened
  • 4 ounces cream cheese (I used Neufchatel, the 1/3 less fat variety)
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 12 cup muffin tin or one 8 inch square cake pan.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients – flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients until combined – sugar, pumpkin, eggs, oil and vanilla. Whisk the dry ingredients into the wet until combined. Fold in the chocolate chips and divide evenly among the muffin tins or spread in the pan.
  • Bake 22 – 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

For frosting
  • Soften the butter and cream cheese and blend together until mixed and smooth. Sift in the powdered sugar and cinnamon and blend all the ingredients together.
  • Frost immediately, or chill for future use.
